Day 1 Hanoi Arrival

Welcome to Hanoi - Vietnam's capital. Upon arrival, our private English speaking tour guide & driver from Cyclo Travel & Leisure will greet your family & transfer your family to your hotel in Hanoi Old Quarter.

Day 2 Hanoi city tour

Your Hanoi city tour will begin at the Ho Chi Minh complex, containing Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Ba Dinh Square, the One Pillar Pagoda, Ho Chi Minh’s former residence and the Presidential Palace. Across these buildings, we will find an attractive mixture of vibrant architecture and the site of some of the most important history in Vietnam. We finish our time at the political centre of the city by heading to the Temple of Literature, constructed in 1070 as the country’s first university, lauding the teachings of Confucius to the select few students who studied here.

We will have a traditional Hanoi lunch before moving onto the Museum of Ethnology, which provides an excellent account of the 54 ethnic minorities around Vietnam. In the museum’s gardens, kids will enjoy exploring the full-scale replicas of traditional stilt homes from some of the country’s hidden tribes. 

We end the day with a wonderful cyclo ride around the city, a relaxed and safe way for kids and adults to observe the procession of daily life in the capital. Our city tour ends at the Thang Long water puppet theatre on the shores of Hoan Kiem Lake, where an exciting water puppet show will entertain as well as educate everyone about Vietnamese culture and traditions. Day 3 Hanoi - Mai Chau Valley

Have breakfast & check out the hotel and prepare for pick-up at 08:00 AM, our tour guide & driver will take you along a scenic road to its exquisite end point at Mai Chau, making a few interesting stops along the way. One such stop is to Giang Mo village, a stunning array of humble houses set amidst rice paddies at the foot of the Mo Mountain, where we can meet some of the locals and watch the kids be amazed by their colourful traditional dress. We will have lunch here and continue on our way. 

Once we have arrived in Mai Chau, we will take in the gorgeous scenery from Lac Village, watching the daily lives of the native Thai ethnic minority here. Soak up the beautiful atmosphere of Mai Chau on a stroll around the village, greeting smiling locals and affording your kids a lot of playtime in the wide open spaces. Day 4 Mai Chau Cycling tour

Enjoy a delicious local breakfast today in some truly special surrounds. We will be seeing more of the gorgeous nature of Mai Chau on a cycling tour around the province, taking in the cascading rice paddies as they descend from their steeped positions on tall mountainsides.

Consult our guide for the most appropriate route to take. There are three options that end in Pom Coong village, Van village or Chieng Chau village, all of which are the residences of vibrant ethnic minority cultures living uncomplicated lives amongst some of northern Vietnam’s most beautiful scenery. On the way, we will pass markets where we will find an endearing communal atmosphere, along with many other examples of a traditional life where family connections are prized above everything else.

We return to the homestay in Lac village for another delectable meal, followed by free time during the afternoon. Relax with a Vietnamese coffee in front of the incredible view or jump back onto the bicycles with the kids for further explorations of Mai Chau’s more secretive wonders. Overnight in Mai Chau

Day 5 Mai Chau - Hoa Lu - Tam Coc

A final breakfast with our friendly hosts sets us up for the 2.5-hour drive to Ninh Binh province, where we will begin our one-day tour at Hoa Lu. This small enclave was the capital of Vietnam for 41 years, spanning the rules of Emperor Dinh and Emperor Le before the capital was moved to Thang Long (Hanoi). Now Hoa Lu’s legacies to the two emperors are found in its two memorial temples, to which we will pay a visit.

Along a series of undulating karst mountains, we arrive at Tam Coc. We have lunch in a local restaurant here and board our boat for one of the most beloved activities on this kids’ holiday, a sampan boat cruise along Tam Coc’s stunning river. A constant source of wonder for children is how the local rowers steer the boat with their feet while cruising along a spectacularly scenic waterway, flanked by goat-speckled mountains and rice paddies with caves and mountaintop pagodas.

We finish our day at the Bich Dong Pagoda, a gorgeous religious building that provides excellent views of Tam Coc as we ascend. You will check into your Tam Coc resort and enjoy the rest of the day in resplendent scenery. Overnight in Tam Coc

Day 6 Ninh Binh - Halong Bay - Overnight on cruise

Take an early breakfast in Tam Coc, we will leave at 08:00 AM in order to catch our cruise in Halong Bay. We will have a few rest stops along the way and meet our cruise at around midday, before boarding and embarking into the unique and world-renowned seascape ahead of us. Around 3000 limestone islands comprise the glorious bay, some of which we will pass between as we skirt the emerald waters, discovering an ancient land frozen in time.

A succulent seafood lunch will be served in the dining room, after which you will have time to relax with your family, either on the top deck or in your cabin. During this portion of your holiday, your kids will experience the magnificence of the bay from up close, through serene kayaking, a visit to astounding Sung Sot Cave and playtime on the beach at Titop Island. For adults, the magic is no less potent and will be cemented with a vivid sunrise between the limestone peaks.

A gorgeous and filling dinner will usher in the evening, where activities include squid fishing and board games.

Day 7 Halong Bay - Hanoi - Fly to Danang - Drive to Hoi An

Enjoy a filling breakfast as the new light of the day graces Halong Bay’s limestone maze. We have time to relax and visit a secret lagoon by sampan boat this morning, before returning to the cruise and spending many more hours in the open bay. We will head back to the harbour at around midday, enjoying a splendid lunch as we do so, and transfer to Hanoi’s Noi Bai airport, where you will catch your domestic flight to Danang. 

Once arrived in Danang, our driver will greet you warmly and transfer you to Hoi An, lying 30km to the south. We will get you checked into the resort and then you are free to relax into the magical evening atmosphere of one of Vietnam’s most beloved towns. Overnight in Hoi An

Day 8 Hoi An - Tra Que Vegetable village - Bay Mau coconut forest

After breakfast at your hotel, our guide will meet you and present you with bicycles in preparation for our cycling tour to Tra Que farming village. This section of the holiday is a real hands-on treat for the kids.

We will begin our cycle across quaint country roads, taking in the idyllic scenes of Vietnamese farmers in the rice paddies and stopping for photos. Upon our arrival to Tra Que, we discover a completely organic village centered around farming, which you will experience first-hand by assisting with the watering, planting and harvesting of clean crops. For the kids, a ride on a water buffalo as they plough the fields will provide a beautiful memory, and watching the ducks waddle through the rice paddies leave them with a favourable image of Vietnam for years to come.

After a delicious lunch, and after all of the farming work, you can relax on a basket boat cruise around the river and learn of the traditional fishing techniques still employed by the locals here. The whole family can have a go at paddling one of these iconic, round-bottomed boats as we pass through a beautiful coconut forest, with verdant tropical nipa palm arching over our heads.

Day 9 Hoi An Free Day

Take breakfast at a time that suits you this morning and prepare your family for a free day in Hoi An.

There are many family-friendly activities in Hoi An, two of which can be found on its northeastern coast, where Cua Dai and An Bang beaches are located. These two stretches of white sand and arching palm trees look onto the sparkling East Vietnam Sea, a gorgeous spectacle for the whole family to behold. Another idea is to head to the Sun World Ba Na Hills, a French-style resort complete with an amusement park and many flamboyant shows for the kids, while adults can enjoy the wine cellar, French garden, and the stunning architecture of the Golden Bridge. Day 10 Hoi An - Departure
